Seasonal Gutter Maintenance Checklist for Homeowners
Seasonal Gutter Maintenance Checklist for Homeowners
02/Aug/2025

You’ve probably heard the phrase "get your mind out of the gutter." While gutters aren’t the most glamorous part of your home, they quietly do a very important job: protecting your roof, walls, foundation, and landscaping from water damage.

Seasonal Gutter Maintenance Checklist for Homeowners

Ignoring your gutters might not seem like a big deal... until that next heavy rain hits and you’ve got a waterfall pouring over the edge, soaking your siding, and possibly creeping into your basement. Yikes. That’s the kind of surprise no one wants.

Gutter maintenance is one of those tasks that screams "Eugh." You know, right up there with budgeting for car tires and getting your furnace serviced before winter. But unlike changing your oil or filing taxes, it’s easy to forget about your gutters until there’s a problem.

Don’t worry - we’ve got you covered. In this brief article brought to you by Mr. Handyman of Dallas, we’ll walk you through why gutter maintenance matters and give you a seasonal checklist to help stay on top of it. And if climbing ladders isn’t your thing, well... that’s what we’re here for. Give us a call to hire a uniformed and trained handyman for the job.

Why Gutters Matter More Than You Think

Gutters have one job: to carry rainwater away from your home. But that job is crucial. If water isn’t properly directed away from your home, it can lead to:

  • Foundation Problems: Water pooling around your foundation can cause cracks, leaks, and shifting soil.
  • Basement Flooding: A clogged gutter often leads straight to a soggy, moldy basement.
  • Roof Damage: Overflowing water can back up under shingles and rot your roof decking.
  • Siding and Paint Damage: Water spilling over clogged gutters can stain, warp, or peel siding and paint.
  • Pest Infestations: Stagnant water and debris-filled gutters are the perfect hangout for mosquitoes, ants, and even rodents.

In short, neglecting your gutters is an open invitation to bigger and more expensive problems. And while some homeowners tackle it themselves, many prefer to leave it to the professional handymen at Mr. Handyman of Dallas.

Seasonal Gutter Maintenance Checklist

Staying ahead of gutter issues doesn’t mean climbing up there every weekend. A little seasonal attention can go a long way in protecting your home. Here’s a year-round checklist to keep your gutters working like they should:

SPRING: That's right... Spring cleaning.

  • Remove leaves, twigs, and any critters that may have made a winter home up there.
  • Check for loose brackets, cracks, or sections pulling away from the roof after snow or ice.
  • Run water through the downspout with a hose to make sure it flows freely.
  • Leaky seams or small holes? These can often be sealed, but badly damaged sections may need repair or replacement.

SUMMER: Those Spring showers may have done damage.

  • Watch for sagging. Gutters heavy with trapped water or debris may start to sag. This could mean your hangers or fascia are weakening.
  • Trim overhanging branches so they don’t dump leaves, needles, or fruit straight into your gutters.
  • Make sure gutters are sloped properly to direct water toward the downspouts and NOT pooling in the middle.

FALL: Typically a great time to schedule your gutter cleaning.

  • Fall is peak season for leaves and debris, and clogged gutters are at their worst. This is the #1 time to call in a gutter cleaning professional if you want to avoid risky ladder time.
  • Birds, squirrels, and wasps sometimes build nests in gutters. You’ll want to evict them before winter.
  • Seal any small leaks to avoid ice dams during the colder months.

WINTER: Not a safe time to climb ladders. Hire professionals for the job.

  • If your gutters aren’t clean, melting snow can refreeze and form ice dams - leading to roof leaks and damage.
  • Watch out for icicles! They might look pretty, but large ones can pull gutters loose or even break them.
  • Check for signs of overflow. Water stains on siding or near the foundation during a winter thaw may point to a problem up top.
