Get Floor Repair in Richardson, TX

Every type of flooring wears out in its own way: Hardwood scratches and dents, tile cracks and grout falls apart, vinyl tears and curls at the edges, carpet stains and wears thin… you get it. Whatever flooring you’ve got, it will wear out over time.

Understanding what goes wrong with each type of flooring is integral in making smart decisions about when to repair and when to replace. The right choice depends on the material, the damage, and other factors.

The team at Mr. Handyman is proud to deliver all sorts of flooring solutions. Whether you need a few boards urgently repaired or it’s time for your floor replacement in Richardson, our experienced handymen are ready, willing, and able to help.

Hardwood Flooring: Worth Saving

Hardwood floors are expensive, and this makes floor repair a smart option when damage isn't too severe. Surface scratches, dull finish, and minor dents can usually be fixed with some refinishing. That is, sanding down the damaged layer and applying fresh finish.

When just a few boards are damaged, those individual boards can be replaced without sacrificing the rest of the floor. The team at Mr. Handyman can match the wood type and stain color so the new boards blend in with the old ones.

With all that said, it’s time to explore a floor replacement if:

  • Water has soaked deep into many boards,
  • The wood has been refinished so many times there's not enough thickness left to sand again, or
  • More than half the floor shows serious damage.

Tile Flooring: Easy to Fix

Tile floors are great in moisture-prone areas like kitchens and bathrooms. While water resistance is great, the biggest advantage of tile flooring is that damaged pieces can be removed and replaced without ripping up the whole floor.

This makes tile one of the easiest flooring types to repair. Individual cracked or broken tiles can be popped out and new ones installed in their place, and old grout can be scraped and replaced. These repairs are quick and affordable.

To be fair, the challenge with tile repair comes when the specific tile pattern is discontinued and can't be matched. Property owners have to decide between having mismatched tiles or replacing the whole floor for a uniform look.

Laminate Flooring: Water Is the Enemy

If you love the look of hardwood but are stuck in a tight budget, then laminate floor installation might be the one for you. Laminate flooring is made of compressed wood fibers with a photo layer on top that looks like wood.

There’s a caveat, though. If you thought hardwood was vulnerable to water, then wait until you experience laminate. When it gets wet, the wood fiber core swells up. This swelling can't be undone; the damage is permanent.

Water damage forces your hand into replacing damaged planks or the whole flooring, but small chips and scratches can be filled with repair putty. Trying to repair water-damaged laminate just delays the inevitable.

Carpet: Limited Repair Options

Carpet can be repaired in specific situations. Small burns or stains can be cut out and patched with matching carpet, and wrinkles and loose areas can be stretched tight again. Even separated seams can be re-glued.

The problem with carpet repair is that it only works for isolated damage. When wear patterns or stains show up across the whole floor, or when the padding underneath has broken down, repair doesn't make sense anymore.

If you’ve had the same carpet for over 10 years, then it might be beyond floor repair in Richardson. Once it reaches the end of that lifespan, replacing it costs less in the long run.
